Peabody West Little Leaguers head to World Series

= = = = = U P D A T E = = = = =

Well the young folks had quite a time in Pennsylvania! They represented the City of Peabody proudly, and while they did not always finish the game with a W in the scorebox, they certainly played with spirit and energy and gave it their very best! That is absolutely all that anyone can ask of another person or team!

Thank you all for your efforts this season and for allowing us to share in your success!
CONGRATULATIONS!!

As many of you might have guessed, I am not the biggest sports fan out there. And I don't like to see school athletics favored over academics. But this is a different story.

Peabody West Little League has advanced to the Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, PA after a stunning series of wins... some of them in the heart-stopping category.

The next 3 games are as follows: Schedule is here
and for more info: www.littleleague.org

GAME 4
8:00 pm, Friday, 8/21/09
New England vs. Southwest

GAME 13
6:00 pm, Sunday, 8/23/09
West vs. New England

GAME 22
4:00pm, Tuesday, 8/25/09
Great Lakes vs. New England

Now it looks like these will be broadcast only on ESPN360 (Click Here) I believe this is a free internet service IF you are using a member ISP. Note: Comcast and Verizon are BOTH MEMBER ISP's!

I think this is one event that can bring the entire City together to cheer on and support our young people!
GOOD LUCK PEABODY!

they have provided us with some great memories...so far...but let me ask all of this...do these Lynnfield wannabes play on the same level playing field as their less affluent Peabody Central little leaguers?...and why do we have to have two Little Leagues here in Dark City? Every other sport has kids from all across 01960 playing together...why is baseball the lone standout to this approach?? check the background of these well drilled West Peabody kids and you will see that many of them play year round, in out of state tournaments and camps...and they can afford to do so ! Youth sports is all about the money these days folks !!

OG,
West-Peabodyites have long desired to secede from Peabody. When you ask a resident from Lynn Street or Main Street where they are from, they will respond "Peabody." Ask a resident of Russell Street and they will respond "West Peabody." Their desire to make this distinction says it all.
I agree that their affluence gives them a distinct advantage over players with more humble backgrounds.
All that being said, I am a firm believer that we are all citizens of Peabody and should support our little leaguers. GO PEABODY!

Please you people are amazing. A feel good story and you want to sit and complain. Lynnfield Wannabes, and I come from West Peabody not Peabody come on.

I live off of Brich Street near the Burke School. When asked where I live it has always been and always will be Peabody.

Why two leagues I would think the number of kids and the number of fields play a role.

Hey KD--not following your 'number of kids and number of fields theory"...again I ask the question why can't there be ONE Little League here in a city of almost 50000 people...do other cities of comparable size have two leagues?? why is there a NEED for us to have a Western Peabody League and another Central League if we are all in one zip code? can any baseball experts out there explain this need to me beyond politics and elitism?
And I am not 'complaining' about this feel good story...I am simply pointing out the facts.

There are actually 3 leagues in Peabody - American, National, and Western. I don't know why there are 3 leagues, but would imagine that one reason is logistical (try driving cross town at evening rush-hour to bring your kids to practice or a game every night) while another is it provides a greater number of kids with an opportunity to participate in all-star leagues like this one.

OG, your comments on this topic are truly enlightening. Do you envision yourself a modern day James Dean - man from the wrong side of the tracks? Fighting the rich and elite from West Peabody?

Oopps, gotta run. Late for dinner at the country club.

logistics?? and all others sports are immune from this logistical challenge? again...why is baseball the only sport with 2 or 3 leagues in the same city?? there should be no need for it.

OG, once again I will do the search for you.

Cities with more then one league in District 15.

Danvers 2
Beverly 2
Salem 2
Gloucester 2
Peabody 3 (Larger Pop.)

Now link to the page below and look at the other 15 districts most have many cities with more than 1 team.

Happy now Peabody is not the only one.

go back and read my original post on this topic (8/21/09 at 11:48 AM)...these West Peabody kids pulled off a miracle just getting to Williamsport going up against kids from cities with much larger populations that little old West Peabody...my point is this...MAYBE if we put together an all star team that represented the ENTIRE city we could fare even better??

Your right OG thats what you were saying. PLEASE!

There is a large population in peabody so they have to have 3 leagues...is that simple enough for you

where's the welcome home party? Did I miss it? do we only celebrate championships and not good above and beyond accomplishments?? only here in Dark City would we neglect to honor these kids for making it to Williamsport....how could the Mayor and the West Peabody League let this happen ??

Hey MattyHoz 9---first of all..great game against Chula Vista...hell of a job....now let me ask you this...why do we only have one Pop Warner League, one PBA league and one PYH league and one Peabody soccer league with our "huge" youth population?

Unknown said...

I think its because little league has different rules

OG says...
Do all of you realize that some kids go to elementary school in "West Peabody" and their parents vote in "West Peabody" but they can't play baseball in the "West Peabody" little league...oh yes...it is true...ask around...and it makes no sense to me.

Unknown said...

You play in the baseball league where you live...if you live near peabody national, you play for them...if you live near peabody american you play for them...if u live near peabody western, you play for them

OG says...
why does a kid who lives down off Lynn Street have to travel all the way to Kennedy Field to play soccer? Why does a kid who lives up of Catherine Drive have to drive all the way down next to the Torigian center to play lacrosse? Why does a kid who lives near Brooksby Farm have to drive over to South Peabody to play baseball near the South School? But a kid who lives near St Adelaides only has to swing over to Cy Tenney to play all his baseball games? how convenient.... OG says that this is not a logistical issue for the West Peabody Little League...it is something else...and what is that something else ??
