Slow News Month?

I have been looking for more topics of interest... in the newspaper(s), on-line and even in Dunkin Donuts.

The basic opinion is that National events are holding dominance over local issues... and even though the economy is in terrible straits and the effects are playing out all around us, there is nothing concrete for me to bring up here.

So perhaps you have some ideas or concerns that you would like to air? Here's your chance. This blog is still getting a few visitors each day so maybe we can discuss how YOU are handling the current downturn in this thing we call an economy.

And, yes, I am still upset about the contract with the police union. But frankly, while others are predicting that elected officials 'heads will roll' in the next elections... I feel it will all be forgotten and we will forever have a 9/11 holiday for the cops here in Peabody.

Hi PI,

Happy to see that you are still blogging, as the times are very slow and very boring.

Good morning,
They way I handling the downturn in the economy is by reduce spending, pay down credit card and no spending other then necessaries. Something I think everybody should do, try volunteering your time to help somebody less fortunate then yourself. I also like to give random act of kindness to strangers or others in need.

Hi Anon:

I think you are on to something there! I applaud your giving spirit as well.

My family has indeed cut back too. Christmas was just as jolly but not as plentiful as in the past... adults were presented with gifts of laughter and food, while the kids still got some goodies to enjoy.

We have been shopping Market Basket exclusively (no more special treats from Whole Paycheck (Wholefoods) and all my new clothes come from Savers in Danvers.

Now, I will admit to an indulgence or two... but mostly in the form of an Italian Chianti or a (pared down) meal at Su Chang's or Toscana's.

But mostly we are hunkered down, paying down the CC's and keeping current with all the bills... and I will admit, thinking of options should job loses be in our futures.

Of course, the Haven and CAH still get a little help from us as someone else is always a bit more in need.

Hang in there and keep up your good works... things will improve eventually.

OG says....
here's the real question PI---many have learned a harsh financial lesson with respect to debt and overextending themselves...so when things return to normal will these people return their old ways or will they have seen the light?? OG is proposing that we add a required course to the curriculum to the high school curriculum called PERSONAL FINANCE...we spend a lot of time teaching to tests like MCAS but little focus is given to real life skills that those from all economic backgrounds could benefit from....Suze Orman is my new American hero...many could benefit by listening (and here's the key) and following her financial advice.

Hi OG:

I think that adding a Practical Life Skills initiative throughout ALL classes taught in the school system might be a very effective way to get students to think about the decisions they will be making, and the future consequences they might face because of them.

Instead of a single course, why not use real life practical living strategies as the examples in mathematics and English classes? The same for other classes... teach, but more importantly, SHOW how acting in a more responsible manner will provide a better future.

As far as Orman... I have heard her a few times, mostly later in the evenings on PBS and she doesn't do it for me. Maybe if I watched her more, and more recent programs and articles, I might have a different view.

Insider,

Have a good time in Florida!

I'm going to Florida? I haven't been to the Sunshine State in over 5 years!

I have been saving my pennies and am finally going to take a short vacation with my family (first in 2+ years) even though the economy says don't do it! Too many people (young and old) have been looking forward to this event for too long to back away now. Besides... that's the beauty of non refundable tickets.

Sorry if you thought I was someone I'm not.

OG was down in the Sunshine State last fall...at that time there were MANY housing foreclosures but new building was occurring in commercial areas and there were some highway projects going on as well...things are flat and warm there for sure...their unemployment is higher than here...not good no matter where you travel these days...
