Crystal Lake - Cleanup Soon?!!?

The cleanup and dredging of Crystal Lake and Elginwood Pond seems to be one BIG step closer to getting underway with a report to the City Council from Assistant Planning Director Blair Haney.

The Lynn Item: Peabody pond dredging projects estimated below price expectations

This is very welcome news indeed! Haney told the councilors that not only was the project going to cost significantly less, but the estimated time to complete the work is mush less as well!

And Haney made the STRONG POINT that all the studies that were performed during the past few years have PAID OFF WELL in determining the causes of the vegetation and how to control them in the future.

Score one for science and logic. Kudos to the Community Development Department on this one.

Despite some folks fear that this project will not happen until they are in the Torigian Center (wink @ OG) it looks like progress (and pride) is alive in Peabody still.

PI tell the whole story. Nothing is being done yet just more consultants are going to make money of this mess.

Below is from the Peabody Weekly. The first paragraph was left out of the Lynn Item story.

PEABODY - Over the next two months city planners will be busy drafting a public bid document to hire an engineering consultant for the cleanup of Crystal Lake and its neighbor, Elginwood Pond.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Crystal Lake asked Assistant Planning Director Blair Haney to begin that process last week, along with preparing an application for Community Preservation Act money and bringing the project up to “shovel ready” status to qualify for federal stimulus funds.

Haney, who heads up the project for the city, reported to councilors that $125,000 in state grant money has been spent thus far. Dewatering and water quality studies were recently finished, the latter of which confirms the city’s previous inclination to implement measures to protect the watershed area first.

Well, as you posted the original story did not specify a delay. I thought the contract had already been granted.

But I don't see this as anything but being one step further back in a long process that is heading towards resolution.

And, despite what many others have said, Haney makes the point explicitly that the use of multiple consultants and surveys/reports on this problem area has resulted in a much more comprehensive action plan to reduce problems now and in the future.

I am not sure how you can blame me for not telling the whole story when the whole story (As you put it) was not reported (yet).

You posted Sat the 7th. The Weekly News had this on the 5th. All I am saying if you are going to give the city kudos on your blog make sure you tell the entire story. The Patriot reports all negitive and you report all roses. Maybe if you both researched a little more we would have something solid.

I was very happy reading about this the way you had it. Now I am not as excited about it since the city will be wasting more money on consultants.

125k already spent on consultants how much more do we need?

Criticism taken.
I actually do not try and paint with rose colored glasses... but many feel I am simply painting a happy picture.

Personally I would disagree with that thought - I think I am simply much less negative than some of the other bloggers out here - but (hopefully) in an analytical way.

I do appreciate your comments.

It is nice to know you take criticism well. I hope you continue your blog as an unbiased forum for all. Every story has two sides we all need to meet in the middle.

Just make sure you research all angles, as you have done in the past.

I would like to hear your views on the 4th of July thing on the Patriot.
