Walnut Street Park gets 9 thumbs up from City Council!

Lynn Item: Peabody council OKs purchase of vacated property
Salem News: Council OKs park to revive fouled lot
Salem News Editorial: Green replaces industrial grime in Peabody

Well despite the silly grandstanding protestations of Councilor Mello, and the NO vote from both him and Councilor Sinewitz. the saner minds on the City Council passed the measure and now the City can fully pursue the property.

This is a great opportunity for the neighborhood and the downtown area in general. Let's hope that this is just the first move in a rethinking of what the City of Peabody can do for its citizens and its downtown.

OG says...
let's do SOMETHING downtown and if this park project gets things going then so be it! OG is so tired of this Council saying NO, NO, NO to everything (except inflated union contracts!) that it was a joy to see this park project get the initial green light...BUT when will the park actually exist?? Will OG be hanging out at the Torigian Center by the time we break ground ???? why do I think so!!

Unless you are three steps towards the door already OG... and I think not... I believe that this project will take place during the next Bonfanti administration.

The problem is always the funding. Once the funding is actually in place, the contracting and actual work is pretty straightforward and (somewhat) painless.

My hopes for this site was for there to be a passive floodwater basin built into the design. Not some huge hole in the ground to absorb millions of gallons of water, but simply a small bowl shape to the park that would allow it to be a low point in the area for the purposes of collecting and diverting a small amount of water - thus lessening the impact of any flooding should it occur.

This would not be the primary purpose of this park, simply it would be a slight bonus that could add a slight amount of capacity during a minor flooding event. Even if it prevented just a few folks from getting water damage once in a while... it might be a worthwhile addition to the park.

Let's do this thing and get on with the rest of Downtown.

Rezone. Restripe. Repopulate.
Remake Downtown into a place we all want to be.

Is no one else worried about the train tracks that border this soon to be Park?

Do not say they are no longer used, last year the Sq was tied up because a train hit a dumpster on the tracks. I for one do want to see the next tie up due to someone getting run over by a train.

I just do not see good planning here. Are you trying to tell me there is no other land we can get to build a park????

I could be wrong but does not make much sense.
