Heck, even the Salem News seems to find it a good use of the public funds!
The Salem News: Our View: Peabody blazes trail for bikers, walkers
The City has seen that this is such a success that they have initiated the next phase of the project - connecting the North Shore Mall section to Endicott Street. I have not seen a plan of the path, but I have made a good guess at the location and plotted it on my public map of Peabody Sites of Interest on google maps.
It seems that some people though are FIXATED on the fact that the separate bike path sections DO NOT CONNECT in a seamless fashion. Well, we have two little problems... Rt.1/I-95 and Rt.128 So instead of shrugging their shoulders and giving into defeatist attitudes the planners in the community development department struggled for many many years to make the current bikeway a success despite the gaps.
Since someone posted at the Salem News that bike riders are TOO STUPID to figure out a work around... I decided to help everyone out and show one way around the "problem" areas...

I have not seen the final plan for this bikepath...It appears that wooden fence posts are being intermittently installed...I have seen piles of dirt in some areas...it appears that another surface of asphalt still needs to go down...I have not seen/heard what the ongoing maintenance plan will be and who (what dept) will be responsible for it...and I am not aware of the final signage and markings that will exist....and finally when the construction is supposed to be done because things seem to be moving VERY slowly...so I am sure that if OG got off his lazy ass he could find the answers to all of these questions but can I rely on our informed readers to fill me in?
Sadly... the last 10% of the work on ANY PROJECT is the slowest and longest to accomplish (it seems.) And this holds true in the public, as well as the private, sector.
If I had to guess, it would seem most likely that parks and rec would be the ones maintaining the bikeway. But, if I recall a conversation with a planner long ago, the hope was that some local 'club' would form to sort of become babysitters and protectors of the bikeway, in addition to the city.
Adding to what PI says - public green space that has a volunteer, private caretaking group is better maintained and cared for. The people are emotionally invested in something they spend time on and they treat it in a way as if it were theirs. (The same way I pick up trash every day on "my" grass plot next to the sidewalk and how it really makes me angry when people litter on "my" street.)
Did you ever think that it is not about stupidity as to how to "navigate" to the next section but safety... as well as the whole point of a bike path? I have used the bike path that runs from Somerville through Arlington and into Lexington for years. Yeah we have to cross some streets here and there but all with crosswalks, lights and safety taken into consideration. Parts of it even go over old bridges to get you over areas. You are telling people to navigate through a pothole filled parking lot at Cy Tenney (without getting hit by a maniac pulling into the place)go up a pretty steep hill (real fun if you have little ones with you by the way) down Johnson St. to Lowell and try to safely go under the bridge while dodging cars and trucks in one of the worst traffic areas I have seen.
That seems to defeat the purpose of a leisurely stroll on a nice new path.

is it realistic to place the timely upkeep of this long stretch in the hands of a private club or organization as you suggest? OG says NO! My one and only stated concern with this project has been ongoing maintenance and upkeep. And to hear that the 'hope' was for a local group on involved citizens to take on this challenge doesn't make me feel comfortable. If we take care of this bikepath like we have maintained our schools over the years then it will quickly become an eyesore....and that's how OG sees it.
Safety is a very true concern when bike riding... for children, for adults, for everyone.
The reality is that if there had been an insistence about one continuous non-road crossing bikepath, it NEVER would have happened because the costs would be too high.
As it is we have a very good system with two sections that require extra care as they require travel on regular roads.
I would say that small children should probably not be riding down Lowell Street unaccompanied by adults. But I would say that if they were in West Peabody, The Rt.1/I-95 exchange, the Rt.128 exchange or downtown. These are indeed busy areas and thus those sections should be limited to experienced riders and escorted children.

I am not advocating that NONE of the work be done by the City. Not at all. The City needs to have in place the basic maintenance and policing responsibilities.
However, if it is to truly thrive it must be unbraced by the very people who use it (And love it) in order to make it even better. What I am saying is that if you are walking or riding and see something wrong... report it. Or if you see some trash on the ground, pick it up and throw it away. If we all do a little bit of work, there will be little work to be done.

PI--can we be confident that the city is ready and willing to embrace even this basic maintenance, policing and upkeep? I am very concerned that it won't happen...and perhaps your faith in the good citizens to do the right thing concerns me as well....perhaps I have a bit more of a jaded/pessimistic view of this whole thing than you do...which is fine but...only time will tell if your optimism is realized or if my pessisism becomes reality.
I realize we are fortunate to have the bikeway at all, but I have to disagree with you. While the sections that are "rideable" in West Peabody are lovely, the idea of riding on Lowell Street under Route 1 is not a pleasant one. That area has a great deal of traffic and is dangerous in a car. While Johnson Street and even Lowell Street up to Route 2 is okay. There is absolutely no place for bike under the bridge.
It is just too bad that this resource could not be completed like the rail trails on the Cape.
